You might have a few queries, so let's clear them up.
WHICH FLOOR TYPES CAN YOU USE RUBBERISED CORK UNDERLAY WITH?
Rubber-cork underlay works well under almost any flooring: it’s a great match for laminate boards, parquet, wooden planks, carpets, linoleum, PVC, natural stone, and ceramic tiles. It’s also good for glued floors, giving sound and heat insulation.
This underlay also works perfectly with water-based underfloor heating systems since it spreads heat evenly, boosting comfort. Just keep in mind it’s not suitable for electric underfloor heating, as this could harm the cork layer.
WHAT MAKES RUBBERISED CORK UNDERLAY DIFFERENT FROM REGULAR CORK?
A rubber-cork underlay is basically a stronger upgrade of classic cork. It mixes cork granules with rubber particles, all bonded using polyurethane glue. Because of this mix, rubber-cork is more durable, more flexible, and provides even better thermal and sound insulation. It’s the perfect option for challenging subfloors, offering higher density and superior insulation qualities.
HOW WELL DOES RUBBER CORK INSULATE?
Rubber-cork underlay gives brilliant heat insulation, helping to keep the space cosy. The floor feels comfortably warm underfoot, making day-to-day life more pleasant. When fitted under panels, it acts as a thermal layer, reducing heat escape and cutting down on heating expenses.
CAN RUBBERISED CORK UNDERLAY HELP WITH NOISE?
Absolutely, its noise-dampening abilities greatly lessen sound coming from below as well as noises inside the room, giving you much better acoustic comfort overall.
WHAT'S THE BEST WAY TO PREP YOUR FLOOR BEFORE FITTING THE UNDERLAY?
Ensure the subfloor is spotless, flat, and solid. For optimal installation of a rubber-cork underlay, make sure the subfloor’s moisture level doesn’t go beyond 2.5%, the room temperature stays above 10°C, and the air humidity remains under 75%.
WHAT'S THE PROPER WAY TO LAY YOUR UNDERLAY ON THE FLOOR?
- Letting it settle: Take the underlay out of its packaging a full day before you start so it has time to adjust to the room.
- Cutting to size: Use a sharp blade to cut the underlay, keeping a 2–3 cm gap from the wall edges. Measure and cut the lengths to fit the room, then roll them back up for now.
- Spreading the glue: Pick a cork adhesive like Wakol D3540. Spread it on the subfloor using a notched trowel (B1 or B2) along the width where each strip will go. Wait until the adhesive goes clear — that’s when it’s ready.
- Laying it down: Roll the underlay onto the glued area, pressing it down firmly and using a roller to push out any air bubbles. Make sure each strip’s edges touch neatly without leaving spaces.
- Adding the top flooring: After 24–48 hours, start laying your final flooring, always following what the adhesive maker advises.
Note! Don’t ever screw or nail the underlay to the floor — this will harm its insulating effect. Always stick to the adhesive manufacturer’s instructions when bonding the underlay.
Fed up with cheap underlays that quickly wear out and need swapping after just a few years? Choosing a low-grade underlay means you’re signing up for repeat renovations, unexpected expenses, and lots of extra hassle. Rubber-cork is a solution designed to last for years, saving you time, money, and unnecessary stress.
