Insulation or decoration? When looking for a practical yet stylish solution, it’s easy to fall into the trap of compromise. On one hand, there are the cheaper plastic panels – supposedly “designer,” but that’s where their usefulness ends. And traditional insulation materials? Sure, they work, but you still have to cover them up – they’re hardly something you’d want to look at. Instead of making life harder, why not go for an aesthetic cork insulation board? Not only does it offer excellent insulation, but it also adds character to the space – a rare and ideal combination.

You’ve probably got a few questions – let us answer them!

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN STANDARD EXPANDED CORK AND THIS INSULATING SHEET?

Standard expanded cork is a dark brown material with a distinctive “scorched” appearance, made entirely from natural cork. It’s mainly used in spaces where insulation is the priority, not aesthetics.

Decorative insulating panels, on the other hand, are lighter in colour and more visually appealing. They offer both insulation and a decorative finish. Composed of 97% natural cork and just 3% polyurethane binder, they combine functionality with style. Unlike standard expanded cork, they are odourless and don’t require any finishing work (like plastering) after installation.

If the raw, dark look of traditional expanded cork isn’t quite your thing, these lighter decorative panels make an excellent alternative – especially in spaces where insulation needs to look the part too.

WHERE CAN CORK INSULATION BOARD BE USED?

Anywhere you want to combine visual appeal with effective insulation. They’re perfect for insulating walls, roofs, and ceilings, as well as for finishing and decorating interiors and furniture.

WHAT ARE THE PROPERTIES OF CORK WALL PANELS?

Cork’s structure is packed with tiny air-filled cells, making it an effective insulator. It acts as a natural barrier, offering a range of practical benefits:

  • Thermal insulation – Cork slows down heat loss, helping to keep spaces warm in winter and cool in summer.
  • Acoustic insulation – It dampens both external noise and echo within a room. Walls finished with cork are noticeably quieter compared to those painted or covered with wallpaper.
  • Anti-vibration – Cork effectively reduces the transmission of vibrations, adding to comfort and structural calm.
  • Moisture and pest resistance – Unlike sponge-like materials, cork doesn’t absorb moisture, making walls less prone to mould and damage. It also doesn’t attract insects or rodents, as it offers no nourishment for them.

WHAT IS THE DENSITY AND THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY OF CORK INSULATION BOARD?

The panels have a density ranging between 180–240 kg/m³, and a thermal conductivity coefficient of λ = 0.054 W/mK.

WHICH ADHESIVE SHOULD I USE FOR INSTALLATION?

We recommend the cork adhesive that we’ve personally tested – Dragon. It provides a strong and long-lasting bond with the cork surface.

HOW TO PREPARE A WALL BEFORE INSTALLING INSULATING CORK WALL PANELS?

  1. Make sure the surface is dry, even and clean – free from dust, grease, or remnants of previous materials.
  2. Be sure to fill any gaps or smooth out uneven areas before installation.
  3. Priming the wall is also a smart move – it improves adhesive grip and ensures precise application. If the wall is absorbent, priming is essential (otherwise, the adhesive may soak in and lose effectiveness).

In short: the better the preparation, the longer your cork will stay firmly in place.

HOW DOES CORK COMPARE TO POLYSTYRENE AND MINERAL WOOL?

  • Appearance – Cork doesn’t need to be covered up. It’s naturally decorative – something you certainly can’t say about polystyrene or mineral wool.
  • Eco-friendliness – Unlike polystyrene and mineral wool, cork is a natural material that breaks down harmlessly, making it an environmentally responsible choice.
  • Moisture and mould resistance – Cork doesn’t absorb water and won’t rot, unlike some other materials prone to damage in damp conditions.
  • Sound insulation – Cork offers acoustic performance, superior to polystyrene, which is mainly useful for thermal insulation.
  • Safety – It doesn’t shed fibres or cause skin irritation, unlike mineral wool, which can be dusty and itchy to handle.
  • Durability and dimensional stability – Cork is resistant to wear and retains its shape and insulating properties over time.
  • Antistatic properties – Cork doesn’t attract dust or small particles, thanks to its antistatic surface – unlike many synthetic materials that tend to generate static.

WHAT THICKNESS SHOULD A CORK INSULATION PANEL HAVE?

The optimal thickness ranges from 20 to 50 mm. But you don’t always need the maximum – it all depends on the space and what you’re aiming for (quiet? warmth? both?). If you’re unsure which thickness is right for your needs, just get in touch – we’ll be happy to help!

IS NATURAL CORK SAFE FOR ALLERGY SUFFERERS?

Yes – cork is a natural material that doesn’t release dust, doesn’t trigger allergies, and doesn’t attract dust particles. It has antibacterial properties and doesn’t support mould growth, meaning it doesn’t create a hospitable environment for anything that typically causes trouble for allergy sufferers.

How long can you keep looking at walls that do nothing but “look pretty”? Poor sound insulation, a cold flat, and an interior with no character. Decorative cork panels are insulating, aesthetic, natural, functional, and durable for years to come.

Black text WHY is it worth it?» with cork on the right on a white background.

#1 DECORATION + INSULATION – NO MORE CHOOSING

Trying to design a room that’s both stylish and cosy, but something always feels off? Either the walls are too bare and every step echoes, or the material just doesn’t suit the space? With a decorative cork panel, that problem disappears. It’s a solution that blends aesthetics with practicality – no need to choose between looks and comfort, you get both.

The natural texture of cork really delivers. Warm, subtle, yet full of character. It fits perfectly in light, Scandinavian-style interiors, but also works beautifully in more industrial, loft-inspired spaces. You can lay it any way you like – horizontally, vertically, as a single panel or across the whole wall. A cork feature is both a functional and thoughtfully designed interior element.

#2 VERSATILE

Got a blank wall and no idea what to do with it? A painting doesn’t feel right, a poster doesn’t fit, and wallpaper just seems boring? A cork panel is a backdrop that doesn’t shout, but it does the job – adding depth, texture, and warmth to the space. You can place it behind the sofa, the bed, in the dining room – anywhere you like. It doesn’t impose a style, it highlights it.

Have plants but missing a nice background? Cork panels pair beautifully with greenery. The colours complement each other – green brings life, and brown adds cosiness. With cork, you can create a “green wall” that not only looks great but doesn’t steal the spotlight from your plants.

#3 AN ALTERNATIVE TO POLYSTYRENE AND MINERAL WOOL

Insulating with polystyrene can be a hassle – it works, but installation is time-consuming, the material crumbles, and in the end, it still needs to be covered with a decorative layer. Cork is a different story. You’re working with a natural, attractive material that looks great from the start. No extras needed – just stick it on, and you’re done. You get insulation and decoration in one go.

Mineral wool? It’s fine for industrial use, but do you really want it in your child’s room or bedroom? It can release dust, irritate the skin and airways. Cork doesn’t cause allergies, doesn’t irritate, doesn’t emit harmful substances, and doesn’t need to be concealed.

And one more important point: the environment. Polystyrene and mineral wool are processed materials that become a serious environmental issue once removed. Cork? It’s natural and biodegradable.

#4 A SAFE MATERIAL

Cork doesn’t shed dust or trigger allergies – it’s a natural property of the material. That’s why it’s ideal for spaces where air quality matters (especially in homes of allergy sufferers). You can breathe easy – both literally and figuratively.

And then there’s the issue that keeps cropping up, especially in older buildings: insects and rodents. Cork doesn’t disappoint here either – mice don’t fancy it, cockroaches aren’t drawn to it, and it doesn’t make a good hiding spot for moths. All of this makes cork a practical, everyday choice that simply makes sense.
