WHICH TYPE OF CORK FLOORING TO CHOOSE: GLUED TILES OR FLOATING PLANKS?
When deciding between glued cork tiles and floating cork flooring, it’s essential to define your priorities. Do you value durability and distinctive aesthetics, or do you prefer speed and ease of installation?
Glued cork floor tiles are perfect for those seeking longevity, style, and precision fitting. The adhesive ensures exceptional stability and wear resistance, while a coat of varnish highlights its natural elegance. Though proper subfloor prep is necessary, the end result is unparalleled quality.
Floating cork flooring is ideal when time is tight – it’s convenient and quick to lay. However, it might not provide the same premium finish or lasting robustness as glued tiles.
HOW TO INSTALL GLUED CORK FLOOR TILES?
Installing cork flooring may feel overwhelming at first, but don't worry – we've got your back! Follow this simple step-by-step guide for smooth installation:
Subfloor preparation:
- Assess and prep the base: Ensure your surface is flat, solid, and dry. Level any irregularities using suitable filler and clean thoroughly. In some cases, a self-levelling compound may be required.
- Moisture barrier: Make sure the substrate is properly protected against moisture – this is crucial for the floor’s long-term durability.
- Tile acclimatisation: Let your cork tiles rest in the target room for 72 hours so they adapt to ambient temperature. This prevents expansion or contraction issues later on.
Laying the tiles:
- Layout planning: Find the room centre and mark layout lines using chalk. Ensure tiles near the walls are no smaller than 5 cm.
- Apply adhesive: We recommend Wakol D3540 cork adhesive. Spread it evenly on both the subfloor and tile backs using a roller, following the instructions.
- Laying tiles: When the adhesive turns transparent (ready to bond), start laying tiles from the centre, positioning each one precisely.
- Press tiles firmly: After placing tiles, use a rubber roller or mallet to press down for firm bonding.
- Curing time: Let the adhesive dry for about two days before using the floor.
IS ACCLIMATISATION OF CORK FLOORING NECESSARY?
Yes, cork tiles must acclimatise for approximately 72 hours in the room where they'll be installed. This ensures dimensional stability and prevents deformation from temperature shifts.
IS AN UNDERLAY REQUIRED FOR GLUED CORK TILES?
No underlay is used or needed under glued cork flooring.
WHICH SURFACES ARE SUITABLE FOR GLUED CORK FLOORING?
Cork tiles work best on dry, concrete or wooden subfloors. Ensure the surface is clean and level to guarantee proper adhesion and longevity.
SHOULD RAW CORK TILES BE SEALED?
Absolutely – we recommend sealing cork floors using our varnishes. This helps protect and preserve your flooring’s appearance for years.
Sealing raw cork is key to maintaining durability and visual appeal. While cork is naturally resistant to moisture and wear, untreated surfaces may still be vulnerable to humidity, dirt, and mechanical damage.
Sealing prevents water and liquid ingress, which is especially important in moisture-prone areas like kitchens or bathrooms. It also adds a protective layer against dirt, making cleaning easier and more effective.
DOES CORK FLOORING PROVIDE GOOD THERMAL INSULATION?
Yes – cork’s unique cellular structure gives it superb thermal insulation properties. It keeps rooms warm during cold months and pleasantly cool in summer, reducing heating costs and increasing comfort.
IS CORK FLAMMABLE?
Cork has natural properties that slow flame spread. While not fireproof, it burns more slowly than many flooring options and releases no toxic fumes.
IS CORK WATERPROOF?
Cork has a natural resistance to moisture due to its structure. It’s suitable for damp areas like kitchens and bathrooms. Avoid soaking the floor directly to maintain its lifespan.
IS CORK FLOORING STAIN-RESISTANT?
Yes, it resists most spills, but clean promptly to prevent staining. Regular care and proper sealing enhance its resilience.
CAN CORK BE INSTALLED OVER UNDERFLOOR HEATING?
Yes – but only with water-based underfloor heating. Cork pairs well with such systems, offering excellent heat retention. Avoid electric systems, which may damage the material.
DOES CORK DECOMPOSE?
Cork is naturally resistant to decomposition thanks to its structure. To maintain this, avoid excessive moisture and seal the surface appropriately.
HOW TO CLEAN CORK FLOORING?
Clean with a soft cloth or damp mop. Use cleaners specifically designed for cork to remove dirt while preserving its texture and properties. Avoid harsh detergents that may damage the surface.
IS CORK FLOORING EXPENSIVE COMPARED TO OTHER OPTIONS?
Cork may cost more initially than laminate, but it’s a smart investment. With greater longevity, reduced maintenance, and superior thermal/acoustic insulation, cork offers long-term value and comfort.
SQUARE OR RECTANGULAR TILES – WHAT TO CHOOSE?
Consider room size, style, and layout effect. Both tile shapes offer warmth and insulation.
Square tiles suit smaller rooms and create a balanced look, often making spaces feel larger.
Rectangular tiles add visual length or width – great for larger rooms and versatile layout options like herringbone or parallel lines.
MATT, CERAMIC, OR RAW FINISH – WHICH TILE TO CHOOSE?
Matt varnish: Subtle, refined and enhances cork’s natural character. Easy to clean and ideal for high-traffic areas.
Ceramic varnish: Maximum protection against wear and tear. Great for families or pets – very durable.
Raw cork tiles: For DIY lovers who want a custom finish. Can be oiled for a unique, eco-conscious look.
Cork flooring isn’t just about aesthetics. It also promotes healthier joints thanks to its flexibility, keeps your feet warm during winter, and offers natural sound insulation. Sounds appealing?

With superior resistance to wear and deformation compared to many other floor types, our cork tiles handle heavy use with ease. Ideal for living rooms, kitchens, or even commercial areas, they ensure lasting comfort and visual appeal.
#2 HEALTH & COMFORT
Cork is naturally anti-allergenic and antibacterial, making it a safe choice for you and your family. Its flexibility absorbs foot pressure and redirects it laterally, reducing strain on joints and muscles – ideal for those who spend long periods standing.
Plus, the excellent thermal and acoustic insulation turns your home into a calm, cosy sanctuary. With cork tiles, you’re investing in health and exceptional everyday comfort.
#3 SUSTAINABLE CHOICE
Choosing cork tiles means choosing the planet – cork is a renewable, biodegradable material. It’s harvested by gently stripping the outer bark of cork oaks, which does not harm the tree or interrupt its natural growth cycle. A textbook case of sustainable resource use.
By investing in cork parquet for your home, you’re actively lowering your carbon footprint and supporting environmental progress – proving that elegance and eco-consciousness can work together beautifully.
#4 THE CORK BENEFIT
Cork flooring is more than just attractive – its thermal insulation surpasses traditional laminates and ceramic tiles, keeping your feet warm and comfortable year-round. It combines the softness of carpet with the durability of wood, without the drawbacks like cold ceramic tiles or wood’s sensitivity to moisture and damage.
Its natural moisture resistance also prevents the drying issues found with other floors. Choose cork for flooring that delivers warmth, comfort, and long-lasting performance.
#5 EASY TO KEEP CLEAN
Cork is known for being antistatic, which means it attracts less dust and allergens – making it much easier to keep clean. Our cork tiles are low-maintenance and need less frequent care than most other flooring options.
Regular vacuuming and the occasional damp mop are all you need to keep cork flooring looking great. Choose cork tiles for a hassle-free lifestyle that lets you focus on what matters most.
