You probably have a few questions – let us answer them!

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF USING HOLZPROF FIRE RETARDANT FOR CORK?

The fire retardant penetrates the material and slows down as well as reduces the burning of cork in the event of a fire. Thanks to it, the flames spread more slowly, giving you more time to react.

WHICH MATERIALS CAN BE PROTECTED WITH HOLZPROF FIRE RETARDANT?

The fire retardant works on wood and materials that contain cellulose – including cork. Importantly, it is a water-based product, so it does not alter the appearance or texture of the cork.

Note: The fire retardant only works on absorbent materials. If the surface has previously been varnished, painted, or coated with another layer that blocks absorption, the product will not be effective.

WHAT SAFETY PRECAUTIONS SHOULD BE TAKEN WHEN APPLYING HOLZPROF?

Wear protective gloves and goggles, and ensure good ventilation in the room. When applying by spray, use a mask with a P3 filter. This way, the application will be both safe and comfortable. Also, remember to always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

HOW SHOULD CORK BE PREPARED BEFORE APPLYING THE FIRE RETARDANT?

Make sure the surface is clean, dry, degreased, and free from dust, dirt, stains, or adhesive residues.

Remember that cork must not be painted, varnished, or protected with any other coating that would block absorption of the fire retardant. Only then will the product penetrate the material and work effectively.

HOW SHOULD HOLZPROF FIRE RETARDANT BE APPLIED TO CORK?

  • You can apply the fire retardant with a brush, roller, by immersing the cork in the product, or – if you have the right equipment – using a vacuum-pressure method. Whichever option you choose, remember that every side of the cork must be treated.
  • The recommended cork moisture content is around 16%, with a maximum of 18%. Do not treat frozen or icy surfaces.
  • Application of HolzProf should be carried out in three stages, with intervals of 40–60 minutes between each coat. The total consumption should be at least 300 g/m² (270 ml/m²), and for denser wood, such as Canadian WRC cedar, at least 360 ml/m². The product must penetrate the material to a depth of 1.5–3 mm to ensure effective protection. The recommended application temperature is +10–30°C (minimum +5°C), with air humidity below 75%.
  • Full fire resistance is achieved after 7 days (under optimal application conditions – approx. 20°C, air humidity below 75%). During drying, protect the cork from direct sunlight and precipitation.

HOW SHOULD HOLZPROF BE STORED?

Store the product in its original, tightly closed container, in a dry and cool place with good ventilation. The optimal storage temperature is between +5°C and +25°C. Protect the fire retardant from freezing.

The product’s shelf life is 24 months from the date of manufacture.

Do you want to protect cork, but feel put off by complicated products? Most require mixing, specialist tools, and lengthy preparation – which makes it easy to keep putting it off. HolzProf is a ready-to-use fire retardant for cork – application is straightforward, quick, and requires no prior experience.

Black text WHY is it worth it?» with cork on the right on a white background.

#1 ENHANCED FIRE RESISTANCE

Cork is naturally resistant to fire – in the event of a blaze, it tends to char rather than burn. However, in some applications this is not enough, and additional protection is required.

HolzProf complies with EN 13501-1 and achieves fire reaction class B-s1,d0. This means it hardly spreads flames, produces only a minimal amount of smoke, and does not generate burning droplets or particles.

#2 EASY APPLICATION

There’s no need for mixing or diluting – the product is ready to use straight away. This makes application quick and hassle-free. Its liquid form allows it to penetrate the structure of cork easily, reaching not only the surface but also deeper layers. This is crucial, as effective protection goes beyond what can be seen with the naked eye.

What’s more, you can carry out the entire process yourself. The application is a bit like painting: simple, intuitive, and requiring no special skills. The only difference is that instead of changing the cork’s colour, you’re enhancing its safety.
