This is a contact adhesive made from a water-based dispersion. Its composition is based on a latex-acrylic blend, meaning it’s solvent-free, safer to handle, and more user-friendly.
It’s perfect for fixing all types of natural cork – whether flooring (natural, veneered, waxed, or factory pre-finished), decorative wall panels, or insulating and technical boards.
Note: Wakol D-3540 should only be used indoors.
HOW DOES A CONTACT ADHESIVE WORK COMPARED TO A REGULAR ONE?
A contact adhesive behaves differently than a typical glue. With a normal adhesive, you spread it on one surface, press the material into place, and let it set. With a contact adhesive, it must be applied to both sides – the cork and the base layer. After that, you wait until it dries clear before joining them firmly together.
HOW MUCH TIME DOES THIS CORK GLUE NEED TO EVAPORATE?
The waiting time depends on the surface type:
- For absorbent bases – around 30–45 minutes.
- For non-absorbent bases and the reverse side of coverings – about 60–90 minutes.
HOW LONG DOES WAKOL D3540 STAY USABLE AFTER APPLYING?
The adhesive’s open time is usually:
- Roughly 2–3 hours under normal conditions.
- 1–1.5 hours when working with lacquered cork tiles.
These times are based on standard conditions (20°C and 65% relative humidity). Under different circumstances, they may change.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR WAKOL CORK GLUE TO FULLY CURE?
Allow roughly 24 hours – this ensures the adhesive achieves maximum strength, making the surface ready for use or finishing.
WHAT’S THE RECOMMENDED METHOD TO SPREAD WAKOL CORK ADHESIVE?
The most effective way is with a short-pile velour roller. It applies a thin and even coat, which is key to achieving a durable bond.
HOW MUCH AREA DOES WAKOL CORK ADHESIVE COVER?
For cork installation, the usual usage is around 150–250 g/m². To give you an idea, a 2.5 kg tub will cover roughly 12.5 m² of surface.
HOW SHOULD THE BASE SURFACE BE PREPARED BEFORE INSTALLING CORK?
- The base must be smooth, dry, and clean – with no dust, grease, wax, cleaning agents, or other residues.
- Cork coverings need a flat and even ground. Any rough or uneven areas must be corrected with a cement filler.
- On surfaces such as anhydrite, magnesite, poured asphalt, or similar, a compulsory levelling coat of at least 2 mm is required.
- Uneven plaster on walls must also be smoothed with filler before application.
- Adhesive work should only begin after the primer has completely set and dried.
WHAT TEMPERATURES ARE SUITABLE FOR USING WAKOL D3540?
Wakol D-3540 should only be used when the substrate temperature is above +15°C and the room temperature above +18°C. Normal room conditions are ideal, as this allows the glue to perform at its best and set more quickly.
If the adhesive has been kept somewhere cold, place it in a warm environment first and let it reach the right temperature before use.
WHAT IS THE APPLICATION METHOD FOR WAKOL D3540?
- Mix the adhesive: Stir thoroughly before starting.
- Spread the adhesive: Apply evenly to both the cork backing and the substrate. The coat should be thin, even, and continuous, without clumps.
- Leave to dry: Allow the adhesive to turn transparent.
- Press together: Position the cork on the substrate and press down firmly (a rubber mallet can be helpful).
Note: Natural cork should only be varnished or sealed 24 hours after being fixed in place.
IS IT POSSIBLE TO INSTALL CORK ON THE CEILING?
Yes, Wakol D-3540 works very well for fixing cork to ceilings. It creates a strong hold, keeping the panels firmly in place, which makes it ideal for decorative or insulating ceiling finishes.
Just ensure the surface is correctly prepared and press the cork panels tightly after the adhesive has aired out.
IS WAKOL D-3540 SUITABLE FOR UNDERFLOOR HEATING SYSTEMS?
Yes, this adhesive can safely be applied with underfloor heating.
WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO REMOVE ADHESIVE MARKS?
When still fresh, the glue can be wiped off easily using water. Once hardened, stains are much tougher to eliminate, so it’s best to clean them straight away.
WHAT IS THE CORRECT WAY TO STORE THE ADHESIVE?
Keep the product in its original, well-sealed container, stored in a cool and dry place. Exposure to frost will irreversibly damage the adhesive.
If properly stored, the adhesive keeps its full effectiveness for up to 12 months from the manufacturing date.
DOES WAKOL D-3540 PRODUCE ANY ODOUR?
It has a distinct scent, but being solvent-free and very low in emissions, the odour is much less noticeable than that of standard solvent adhesives.
