Here you will find answers to the most frequently raised queries.
HOW IS FAÇADE MD EXPANDED CORK MANUFACTURED?
The production process is somewhat comparable to the expansion of popcorn. Natural cork is subjected to heat and pressure, which enlarges its cell structure and creates additional air pockets. These pockets are what enable cork boards to provide superior insulation, retaining warmth and reducing unwanted noise.
WHY IS EXPANDED CORK CONSIDERED A BETTER ALTERNATIVE TO
CONVENTIONAL MATERIALS?
When compared with common insulating products such as polystyrene or mineral wool, expanded cork has several advantages. Mineral wool can release fibres that may pose health risks, whereas cork is safe, renewable and completely biodegradable. It is therefore regarded as a more environmentally responsible option than polystyrene for a durable façade system.
IS EXPANDED CORK SUITABLE FOR EXTERNAL WALL INSULATION?
Certainly. Expanded cork is highly effective for external insulation. With a density ranging from 130–140 kg/m³ (in contrast to the 110–120 kg/m³ of standard expanded cork), this product ensures improved thermal performance and greater resilience to weather conditions and heat loss, making it an appropriate solution for British housing stock.
HOW SHOULD EXPANDED CORK PANELS BE CUT?
Cutting cork panels is straightforward: they can be worked with a hand saw, circular saw or jigsaw fitted with a fine-toothed blade.
WHAT TYPE OF ADHESIVE IS RECOMMENDED FOR FIXING CORK TO A FAÇADE?
The most appropriate choice is the specialist cork adhesive Wakol D-3540. Around 100 g is required per board. A container of 0.8 kg is sufficient for approximately 8 panels, whilst a 2.5 kg bucket will cover around 25 panels.
IS A CORK FAÇADE PRACTICAL IN THE UK CLIMATE?
Yes, cork insulation is extremely well suited to the British climate. Its thermal and acoustic properties help to maintain warmth during winter months and prevent overheating in summer. It also serves as a valuable sound barrier in densely populated areas.
DOES A CORK FAÇADE REQUIRE SPECIAL MAINTENANCE?
No, a cork façade does not demand specialist maintenance. Regular cleaning with mild detergent and water will be sufficient to keep the natural façade both attractive and effective.
CAN EXPANDED CORK BE PAINTED IN A DIFFERENT COLOUR?
Yes, cork façades can be repainted with products specifically designed for natural cork. Should you wish to achieve a different colour tone, high-quality exterior paints may also be applied. Do note that ensuring a uniform finish on the textured surface of cork requires careful application.
Opting for a façade made of natural cork means you’re investing not only in long-lasting beauty for your home but also in a more sustainable lifestyle. Give yourself reassurance, knowing your decision to insulate with cork helps secure a brighter future for generations to come.
Expanded cork and cork façades are thoughtful solutions that let you feel confident, because you’re looking after yourself, your family, and the planet as a whole.

#1 A NATURAL SOLUTION FOR YOUR PROPERTY
An MD expanded cork façade is more than a building material – it’s a clear commitment to protecting the environment. Its natural structure enhances the look of your exterior walls while adding genuine eco-friendly value.
Cork is harvested from the cork oak, a tree found mostly in Mediterranean regions. The process is remarkably sustainable, since no trees need to be cut down. Instead, the bark is carefully removed every 9 to 12 years, allowing the oak to continue growing and naturally restoring itself.
#2 OUTSTANDING THERMAL AND ACOUSTIC INSULATION
Expanded cork offers first-class performance as a façade finish. Millions of tiny air-filled cells provide natural warmth and tranquillity indoors. Its distinctive structure helps regulate interior temperature and softens unwanted noise from outside.
With its low thermal conductivity of λ 0.043 W/mK, cork ensures reduced heat loss, greater energy efficiency, and consistent comfort throughout the year.
#3 THE IDEAL BALANCE FOR A BESPOKE FACADE
MD cork boards, meaning Medium Density, combine the strengths of lightweight and heavier materials, with a density between 130 and 140 kg/m³. This balance makes them both sturdy and easy to handle. An MD expanded cork façade creates a refined, robust finish that will stand the test of time.
#4 A RELIABLE AND DURABLE CHOICE
The MD cork façade impresses not only with its resilience but also with its long lifespan. Expanded cork can last for as long as 50 years and gradually develops an elegant, natural patina over time.
Expanded cork is also naturally resistant to pests, insects, chemicals, mould and fungi. Its cell walls contain suberin – a water-repellent substance – which protects your façade from moisture damage and decay.
It is additionally a fire-safe material, withstanding temperatures from -180°C to +120°C without releasing harmful fumes in case of fire. The MD cork façade complies with EN 13170 + EN 13172 standards, guaranteeing both quality and safety.
#5 ENERGY EFFICIENCY WITH STYLE
Expanded cork is a smart investment, combining reduced energy costs with a beautifully distinctive exterior. Our cork panels, a preferred choice for façade applications, are a long-term solution that quickly pays for itself.
With its excellent insulation properties, lower energy use, and lasting building protection, cork façades deliver significant savings. It’s an eco-conscious solution that makes perfect sense.
