Got questions? Here are the answers!
WHY USE HOLZPROF FIRE RETARDANT FOR WOOD AND CORK?
This fire retardant soaks into the cork and slows down as well as limits the ignition process in case of fire. As a result, flames move at a reduced pace, giving you extra time to take action.
WHAT TYPES OF SURFACES CAN HOLZPROF PROTECT?
It can be applied to wood and other cellulose-based materials – including cork. Since it is water-based, it won’t change the natural look or feel of the surface.
Important: The product only works on absorbent substrates. If the cork has been previously varnished or painted, the fire retardant will not penetrate and therefore won’t be effective.
WHAT SAFETY MEASURES SHOULD I FOLLOW WHEN USING HOLZPROF?
Always wear protective gloves and safety goggles, and make sure the space is well ventilated. If spraying, use a mask fitted with a P3 filter. This ensures the process is both safe and easy. Don’t forget to carefully follow the manufacturer’s guidelines.
HOW DO I PREPARE CORK BEFORE TREATMENT?
The surface must be dry, clean, degreased, and clear of dust, dirt, stains, or glue traces.
Keep in mind that the cork should not be painted, varnished, or covered with any protective finish that would prevent absorption. Only then will the retardant soak in properly and provide protection.
WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO APPLY HOLZPROF TO CORK?
- You may apply it with a roller, brush, by soaking the cork, or – if available – using a vacuum-pressure method. No matter the method, make sure all sides of the cork are coated.
- The cork should ideally have a moisture content of about 16%, with a maximum of 18%. Do not apply on frozen or icy material.
- Application must be done in three layers, with breaks of 40–60 minutes between each coat. The total amount applied should reach at least 300 g/m² (270 ml/m²), and for denser types like Canadian WRC cedar, no less than 360 ml/m². The liquid needs to soak to a depth of 1.5–3 mm to guarantee proper protection. Recommended temperature for application is +10–30°C (minimum +5°C) with air humidity below 75%.
- Full fire protection develops after 7 days (when applied under ideal conditions – approx. 20°C and humidity below 75%). During drying, keep the cork away from direct sunlight and rain.
HOW SHOULD HOLZPROF BE KEPT IN STORAGE?
Always store the product in its original, sealed packaging, in a dry and cool place with adequate ventilation. Best storage temperature is between +5°C and +25°C. Do not allow the liquid to freeze.
The fire retardant remains usable for up to 24 months from the manufacturing date.
Want to keep cork safe but feel discouraged by tricky solutions? Many products need mixing, special gear, and long prep time – making it tempting to delay. HolzProf is a simple, ready-to-use fire protection for cork – it goes on easily, quickly, and doesn’t demand any prior know-how.

#1 IMPROVED FIRE SAFETY
Cork already shows some sort of natural resistance to flames – instead of burning, it usually chars. Still, in many cases this alone isn’t enough, so extra safeguarding is needed.
HolzProf meets EN 13501-1 and reaches fire classification B-s1,d0. In practice, that means it barely spreads fire, gives off very little smoke, and doesn’t drip burning bits or sparks.
#2 SIMPLE TO APPLY
No mixing, no thinning – the formula is ready right from the bottle. This makes the job fast and straightforward. Thanks to its liquid texture, it soaks into cork, protecting both the surface and the inner layers. That’s important, because real safety goes further than what you can see on top.
Better still, you can handle the whole process on your own. Applying it feels similar to painting – easy, natural, and needing no special training. The only twist is that instead of changing colour, you’re boosting protection.
#3 WATER-BASED SOLUTION
Choosing a water-based fire retardant is a real advantage. For one, there’s no harsh chemical odour. For another, it’s much safer to work with. Without strong fumes, you’re far less likely to experience irritation or headaches.
