WHY SHOULD YOU TREAT CORK WITH HOLZPROF FIRE RETARDANT?

HolzProf seeps into the cork and slows down the ignition process while also reducing the intensity of burning. This means that flames spread more gradually, giving you valuable time to act in case of fire.

WHAT MATERIALS CAN HOLZPROF BE USED ON?

The product is suitable for wood and other cellulose-based surfaces, including cork. Because it is water-based, it does not alter the cork’s natural look, structure, or texture.

Important: HolzProf only works on materials that can absorb it. If the surface has been coated, painted, or sealed, the fire retardant will not be able to penetrate and therefore won’t provide protection.

WHAT SAFETY STEPS SHOULD I TAKE BEFORE USING FLAME RETARDANT FOR NATURAL CORK?

Always put on protective gloves and safety goggles, and make sure the space is well aired. When applying via spray, wear a mask fitted with a P3 filter. This ensures safe and comfortable use. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully.

HOW DO I GET THE CORK READY BEFORE APPLYING HOLZPROF?

Check that the surface is dry, clean, free of grease, and has no dust, dirt, stains, or glue residues.

Remember: For the retardant to work, the cork must be untreated. Avoid applying it to surfaces that are painted, varnished, or covered with any finish that blocks absorption.

WHAT IS THE CORRECT METHOD FOR APPLYING FLAME RETARDANT FOR NATURAL CORK?

  • HolzProf can be applied using a roller, brush, by immersing the cork, or – if you have the right tools – with a vacuum-pressure system. Regardless of the method, ensure every side of the cork is treated.
  • The recommended moisture level of the cork is about 16%, and should not exceed 18%. Never use the product on frozen or icy materials.
  • Apply in three layers, leaving 40–60 minutes between each coat. Use at least 300 g/m² (270 ml/m²), and for denser woods like Canadian WRC cedar, apply a minimum of 360 ml/m². The liquid needs to soak between 1.5 and 3 mm into the cork for reliable protection. Ideal application temperature is +10–30°C (minimum +5°C) with humidity under 75%.
  • The treated cork reaches full fire resistance after 7 days (under suitable conditions – around 20°C and humidity below 75%). Keep the cork away from direct sunlight and moisture during the drying process.

HOW SHOULD I STORE HOLZPROF PROPERLY?

Keep HolzProf in its original, securely closed container, in a cool, dry, and ventilated storage area. The best storage temperature is between +5°C and +25°C. Avoid freezing at all costs.

The product remains effective for 24 months from the date of production.

Want to keep your cork safe but frustrated by products that seem too complex? Many options require measuring, mixing, special tools, and a lot of prep work – which often leads to putting it off. HolzProf is ready and easy to use, fast to apply, and perfect even if you’ve never done it before.

Black text WHY should you choose it?» with cork on the right on a white background.

#1 BOOSTED FIRE PERFORMANCE

Cork already offers some natural fire resistance – it tends to char slowly rather than fully ignite. But in certain situations, that protection isn’t enough, and extra measures are needed.

HolzProf is tested according to EN 13501-1 and achieves classification B-s1,d0. That means flames spread very little, smoke levels stay low, and no burning particles or drops are released.

#2 TROUBLE-FREE APPLICATION

Forget about mixing or preparing anything – this solution comes ready to apply. The process is quick and straightforward. Its liquid formula lets it sink into the cork’s structure, providing protection not just on the surface but within the material itself. That’s key for reliable, long-term safety.

Even better, you can do it all by yourself. The method is somehow similar to painting – smooth, simple, and doesn’t require any technical skills. The only thing you’ll be changing is the cork’s safety, not its appearance.
