WHAT THICKNESS OF CORK UNDERLAY SHOULD I CHOOSE?

It depends on a few factors:

Condition of the subfloor: A thicker underlay is better at evening out minor irregularities. If your subfloor is already smooth and level, a thinner underlay will be perfectly sufficient.
Foot traffic: In high-traffic areas, such as hallways or offices, it’s worth opting for a thicker underlay — it will be more durable and resistant to heavy use. In less frequented spaces, like bedrooms or guest rooms, a thinner underlay will do the job just fine.
Insulation: If you’re looking for effective sound insulation and extra warmth, a thicker underlay is the best choice — it offers better thermal and acoustic performance, enhancing overall comfort. However, if these aspects aren’t crucial for you, a thinner underlay will still perform well.
Door and threshold height: A thicker underlay will slightly raise the floor level, which may require adjustments to doors and thresholds. It’s worth considering this early on when planning your renovation.

WHAT TYPE OF FLOORING IS A CORK UNDERLAY BEST SUITED FOR?

It’s versatile and works perfectly under most floating floors. These floors aren’t permanently glued down — they’re either clicked into place or laid loosely. Cork is excellent at dampening sound, evening out minor irregularities in the subfloor, and improving walking comfort. This is especially important for floating floors, as they naturally shift and flex slightly, and therefore require a flexible yet stable base.

CAN A CORK UNDERLAY BE USED WITH UNDERFLOOR HEATING?

Cork tends to retain heat rather than allow it to pass through quickly. With underfloor heating, the aim is for the floor to warm up as rapidly and efficiently as possible. A cork underlay slows down the heating process, which means the system becomes less effective overall.

WHAT DOES A CORK FLOOR UNDERLAYMENT DO?

Above all, it protects your floor. Without an underlay, the subfloor remains uneven, causing panels to flex, creak, and become more prone to cracking or separating over time. With a cork underlay, the floor has a stable foundation, is better installed, and is far less susceptible to damage.

In addition, a cork underlay effectively reduces noise — it muffles footsteps and limits sound transmission. This makes the floor noticeably quieter and much more pleasant to walk on. Cork also improves thermal insulation, so the floor feels comfortably warmer underfoot.

IS CORK COST-EFFECTIVE?

Yes, it is — although at first glance, it might seem more expensive than standard underlays (such as foam ones). In practice, however, investing in cork quickly pays off. Cork is durable and protects the floor from damage, so you won’t need to replace your panels or the underlay itself any time soon.

IS A CORK UNDERLAY RESISTANT TO MOISTURE AND MOULD?

Yes, cork is naturally resistant to moisture, fungi, and mould. This is one of the reasons it has been used for centuries to seal wine bottles and as gaskets — it simply doesn’t absorb water in the same way other materials do.

DOES A CORK UNDERLAY NEED TO BE GLUED TO THE SUBFLOOR?

No, a cork underlay is laid loosely on the prepared surface — it isn’t glued down. This allows it to move naturally with the floor, adapting to any shifts and changes, such as expansion or contraction, caused by temperature and humidity. This flexibility is especially important for floating floors, which require a supportive yet adaptable base.

HOW SHOULD I INSTALL MY CORK FLOOR UNDERLAYMENT?

First, the cork needs to acclimatise — take it out of its packaging and leave it in the room where it will be installed, ideally for 72 hours.
Before laying the underlay, the subfloor should be as clean, dry, and level as possible. We recommend hoovering the surface thoroughly to remove any loose dust or debris. It’s also a good idea to lay a vapour barrier film (the edges should overlap by about 10 cm and extend a few centimetres up the walls).
The cork underlay should be rolled out in strips, perpendicular to the intended direction of the panels. Lay the strips so that they fit closely together, with gaps no larger than 2 mm. Leave at least a 1 cm gap around the edges of the room to allow for natural movement.
For added stability, you can secure the strips together with mounting tape. While laying, it’s best to smooth the material outwards from the centre to avoid any air bubbles underneath — a roller (such as a wallpaper roller) works perfectly for this.

Imagine this: a few months after having your new floor laid, you start to hear creaking sounds, and the panels begin to sag. These sorts of problems aren’t just irritating — they can also lead to costly repairs. But all of this can easily be avoided. Simply use a cork underlay, and you won’t have to worry about any of it.
