WHAT IS A 1.5 MM CORK IN A ROLL BEST USED FOR?

WHY CHOOSE A SELF ADHESIVE CORK ROLL RATHER THAN CORK SHEETS?

A cork roll is particularly useful when you are working on a broader area and want the finished surface to look as consistent as possible. Because the material comes in one continuous length, you can cover more space without creating as many joins between separate pieces.

Cork sheets may be easier to handle for smaller jobs, individual components or projects that require several short sections. The best format depends on the dimensions of the surface, the way the material needs to be cut and how seamless you want the final result to appear.

HOW DOES THE SELF ADHESIVE BACKING MAKE INSTALLATION EASIER?

The adhesive backing reduces the number of steps needed during installation. There is no need to choose a separate glue, spread it evenly or prepare additional tools for applying it. Once the surface is ready, remove the protective film and press the cork firmly into position. This helps you complete the work more efficiently and keeps unnecessary mess to a minimum.

WHICH SURFACES ARE SUITABLE FOR SELF ADHESIVE CORK IN A ROLL?

For the adhesive to hold securely, the surface must be flat, smooth, dry, clean and free from loose dust or dirt. Any unevenness or unstable layer underneath may weaken the bond and cause the cork to lift at the edges. Avoid fitting it over old wallpaper, flaking paint, loose plaster or rough, uneven walls.

HOW SHOULD I PREPARE THE CORK BEFORE FITTING IT?

Before installation, allow the natural cork to adjust to the conditions in the room. Unpack it and leave it there for 72 hours so it can acclimatise to the local temperature and humidity. Although it adds some time to the preparation, this step helps reduce the risk of the material changing after it has been attached.

CAN I USE A 1.5 MM ROLL TO CREATE A CORK PIN BOARD?

Although it is slightly thicker than the thinnest cork rolls, a 1.5 mm layer still does not provide enough depth to hold drawing pins securely. For a practical cork pin board, choose material that is 5 to 10 mm thick and fit it over a firm backing, such as fibreboard.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO PAINT THE CORK SURFACE?

Yes. Use a paint for cork and test it on a small offcut first to check the colour and finish.

HOW MUCH INSULATION DOES A 1.5 MM CORK ROLL PROVIDE?

Natural cork helps limit the transfer of heat and sound, but a 1.5 mm layer is still too thin to provide significant insulation. Its main role is to create a decorative finish, protect the covered surface and add a more natural feel. It can also make a wall feel less cold to the touch, although it should not be treated as proper thermal or acoustic insulation.

For projects where insulation is the main priority, you will need a considerably thicker layer. Material over 10 mm will be more suitable, while products made specifically for this purpose, such as expanded cork or thermal insulation boards, will provide a much more noticeable effect.

A cork covering does not have to be thick to make a visible difference. A 1.5 mm self adhesive cork roll is suitable for projects where you need a slim but noticeable finishing layer. It can be fitted to walls, furniture panels, cupboard fronts, shelves and drawer interiors. It is also useful for crafts, model making and various custom projects.

Because the material comes in a roll, it is easier to cover larger or longer sections without dividing the surface into several small pieces. This means fewer visible joins and more freedom when cutting the cork to suit the shape and dimensions of your project.

#2 A NATURAL FINISH

The characteristic grain of cork brings a warm and natural character to the finished surface. There is no need to hide it beneath decorative prints or artificial patterns. Its colour and irregular texture already create a distinctive finish.

Natural cork is made from the bark of cork oak trees. The bark is removed without felling or permanently damaging the tree, allowing it to grow back over time. It can therefore be harvested repeatedly from the same tree. This process is very different from manufacturing materials made entirely from synthetic raw materials.

Installing ordinary cork often involves several separate stages. You need to find a suitable adhesive, prepare the necessary tools and apply the correct amount across the whole surface.
