Looking for effective insulation? The market is flooded with materials that promise the world but deliver very little. Sure, you could spend more, hire a team to install it and hope for the best. But let’s be honest – it’s a gamble. It might not work out, and your money’s gone. A better bet is something simple, natural and reliable – like coarse-grain self adhesive cork sheets. They’re quick and easy to install, and the results are instant: quieter, warmer, and cosier at home. We know because we’ve tried it.

You probably have a few questions – let us clear things up!

CAN I INSTALL IT MYSELF?

Absolutely. Installing self-adhesive cork is very straightforward – just peel off the backing, stick it on, and you’re done. No need for tools, drills, glue or professional help.

There are just two key things to keep in mind before installation:

  • Only apply cork to smooth, clean, dry and dust-free surfaces (such as plasterboard or furniture panels). It won’t adhere properly to rough or uneven surfaces – even if the wall only feels slightly textured.
  • Allow the cork 72 hours to acclimatise in the room before mounting the panels. This helps it adjust to the environment, so it won’t shrink, peel or come away from the wall later on.

WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON MISTAKES WHEN INSTALLING SELF ADHESIVE CORK SHEETS?

Mistake #1: Sticking cork to a dirty or dusty surface. If the wall isn’t clean, the cork won’t adhere properly and will soon start to peel off.

Mistake #2: Applying cork to a rough or uneven surface. Even if the wall feels just "a little bit textured" – that’s already too much. Self-adhesive cork should only be applied to smooth, clean walls.

Mistake #3: Sticking it on, peeling it off, adjusting, and trying again. Once the cork is in place, trying to reposition or move it can damage the adhesive layer – or even the cork itself.

DO I NEED EXTRA GLUE TO INSTALL SELF ADHESIVE CORK WALL PANELS?

No – the cork already comes with a strong adhesive layer. As long as the wall is clean, dry, smooth and dust-free, the cork will stick firmly. There’s no need to add any extra glue.

CAN I APPLY STICKY BACK CORK OVER OLD TILES OR WALLPAPER?

No – the cork won’t adhere properly in that case. You’ll need to remove any old layers first, and only then apply the self-adhesive cork.

DOES CORK ACTUALLY IMPROVE INSULATION?

Yes – it’s not just a marketing gimmick. Cork’s structure is made up of millions of tiny air-filled cells that act as a natural barrier. This helps keep heat inside during winter and slows down how quickly walls heat up in summer. As for sound – cork helps reduce the everyday noises that tend to get on your nerves: voices through the wall, knocking sounds, or echo within a room.

HOW LONG DO CORK SHEETS MAINTAIN THEIR INSULATING PROPERTIES?

Cork is a material that hardly ages – its insulating properties last for many years, even decades.

Unlike foams or synthetic mats, which can lose their shape, become brittle or lose effectiveness over time, cork remains stable and efficient without the need for frequent replacement.

HOW DOES CORK COMPARE TO POLYSTYRENE AND MINERAL WOOL?

Polystyrene is cheaper, but it’s a synthetic, non-breathable material. Mineral wool, on the other hand, can irritate the skin and airways, making it less suitable for allergy sufferers or children. Cork, however, is a natural, breathable, non-dusting, hypoallergenic material that’s safe and highly effective – especially as an insulating layer.

ARE CORK SHEETS SAFE FOR ALLERGY SUFFERERS AND CHILDREN?

Yes – that’s one of their biggest advantages. Cork is 100% natural – it doesn’t shed particles, release toxins, trigger allergies or attract dust, which is especially important for people with allergies or asthma. It also has antistatic properties, meaning dust doesn’t stick to it.

COARSE-GRAIN CORK WALL PANELS OR ROLLED CORK – WHICH SHOULD I CHOOSE?

Cork sheets are the more “precise” option, perfect for smaller projects or targeted insulation. If you're covering a larger area – such as an entire wall or a section of a room that needs a continuous layer – rolled cork is the better choice.

COARSE-GRAIN, MEDIUM-GRAIN, FINE-GRAIN – WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

  1. Coarse-grain cork has the most irregular surface and is best for acoustic and thermal insulation. Its porous structure, made up of larger granules, effectively absorbs sound waves and retains heat.
  2. Medium-grain cork has a more uniform texture than coarse-grain and is ideal for pin boards, display cases, partitions, and note panels.
  3. Fine-grain cork is the smoothest and most flexible of the three. It’s used for making items such as coasters, gaskets, shoe insoles and accessories. It also works well as a protective or decorative wall layer.

HOW SHOULD I CLEAN CORK?

Cleaning cork is very simple – just use a soft cloth slightly dampened with water. For tougher marks, you can add a mild, pH-neutral detergent.

It’s important not to use harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive sponges, as these can damage the surface of the cork.

Natural cork? As insulation? We were just as surprised – until we saw for ourselves how well it actually works. Instead of wondering whether it’s worth spending a week living with a renovation team in your home, you simply stick self-adhesive cork to the wall – and the problem’s sorted.

#1 PEACE AND WARMTH – NO FUSS REQUIRED

You come home after a long day, dreaming of a quiet moment – maybe a cup of tea, maybe your favourite show – and then your neighbour starts banging pots or cranks the TV up like they’re testing the limits of human hearing. Self-adhesive cork helps dampen noise – each square centimetre contains millions of tiny air-filled cells that act as a natural sound barrier.

Cork insulation also makes a difference to your energy bills. Once you’ve insulated a wall, there’s no need to crank up the heating or walk around in heavy jumpers. It’s a simple way to keep your space warm and your costs down all year round.

#2 INSTALLATION? YOU’VE GOT THIS

You don’t need to be a DIY expert or have a toolbox full of gear. No extra glue, no drill, and no need to wait for a handyman who “might be free next Tuesday”. The cork comes with a self-adhesive backing – just peel off the protective film, press it to the wall, and you’re done. Instant results. No mess, no dust, and no moment of “oh no, what have I done?”.

You save money too – there’s no need to buy extra materials or pay for installation. No labour costs when you’re doing it yourself.

#3 A SMART CHOICE

A genuine one – no loud declarations or empty eco-slogans on a t-shirt. First of all: every sheet helps the environment, because natural cork has a negative carbon footprint. Throughout its production and lifecycle, it absorbs more CO₂ than it emits. There’s no other insulating material quite like it.

Secondly: cork oaks aren’t cut down. The bark used to make cork naturally regenerates every 9–12 years. The same tree can keep providing material for decades.

In short: it’s a choice that’s good for you – and good for the planet.

#4 CLEAN – WITHOUT THE SCRUBBING

Ah, effortless cleanliness – the holy grail for anyone with allergies, a dog, a cat, or just far too much on their plate. Natural cork doesn’t attract dust – its antistatic properties mean it won’t act like a magnet for every speck floating in the air. It’s a real relief, especially if you suffer from allergies or simply don’t fancy spending your life with a duster in hand.

And if it does get a bit grubby? Just wipe it down with a damp cloth – no need for harsh chemicals or heavy scrubbing. Cork is low-maintenance by nature. You stick it on once, give it a quick wipe now and then, and forget about it. Until someone pops round and says, “That wall’s amazing – what is it?”. Then you remember.
