WHAT MATERIALS DOES THE BUREL PANEL COLLECTION COMBINE?

The Burel collection combines two traditional Portuguese materials – cork and burel.

Cork has long been associated with Portugal. Today, it is used for much more than just bottle stoppers or cork boards. It is also used to make decorative wall panels, flooring, furniture and all kinds of everyday items. Burel is a traditional Portuguese fabric made from 100% sheep’s wool. Its origins can be traced back to the mountainous Serra da Estrela region.

Together, they create an interesting combination of two natural materials with completely different textures.

WHAT DOES THE OCEAN'S DEEP MODEL LOOK LIKE?

Ocean's Deep has a natural, warm cork base with irregular pieces of burel in shades of blue and turquoise. You could say the burel is scattered across the entire surface rather than forming a regular pattern.

It is a good choice if you like the natural look of cork but do not want a completely uniform wall. Ocean's Deep adds a touch of colour without covering up the distinctive appearance of the cork itself.

WHAT LAYERS ARE BUREL CORK PANELS FOR WALL MADE OF?

The panels have a three-layer construction:

Protective finish.
Decorative layer made from natural cork veneer and burel elements.
Agglomerated cork core.

HOW ARE THE CORK PANELS FOR WALL INSTALLED?

They are installed using adhesive. For this model, we particularly recommend Wakol D-3540. Its consumption is approximately 150–250 g/m², so it is easy to work out how much adhesive you need for the wall area. A 0.8 kg pack covers an average of around 4 m², which is roughly 22 panels. The larger 2.5 kg pack covers an average of around 12.5 m², or approximately 68 panels.

WHAT SHOULD I REMEMBER BEFORE INSTALLATION?

Before attaching the panels, prepare the wall properly. It should be clean, dry, even and free from dust, grease and other dirt, as these could reduce the adhesive’s bond.

If the surface is uneven, level it first. For highly absorbent surfaces, such as concrete, it is worth applying a primer. This prevents the adhesive from soaking into the wall too quickly.

You should also remember to acclimatise the cork before installation – ideally for 72 hours. This is important because cork needs time to adjust to the temperature and humidity in the room. Insufficient acclimatisation may increase the risk of the panels changing dimensions later on.

ARE THE PANELS BEVELLED?

No. The panels do not have bevelled edges.

WHY CHOOSE CORK PANELS FOR WALL INSTEAD OF OTHER MATERIALS?

Not every material creates the same effect in an interior. Plastic is a synthetic material, while ceramic feels cooler and harder. Cork is completely different in this respect – it is a natural material that feels warm to the touch and looks inviting.

This is particularly important when finishing a wall in a bedroom, living room or home office, and you want the space to feel warm rather than cold. Cork gives the surface a natural texture, while the Burel collection adds an extra colourful detail.

DOES DECORATIVE CORK PROVIDE INSULATION?

It is worth distinguishing between everyday comfort and proper insulation. Decorative cork makes a wall feel more pleasant and warmer to the touch, while also giving the interior a visually warmer feel – that is certainly true.

However, panels from the Burel series are primarily decorative. If thermal insulation is your main priority, ThermoKork Panels or Expanded Cork will be a better choice.

To sum up: if you want to finish a wall and at the same time improve comfort, decorative cork makes sense. If insulation itself is the priority, it is better to choose a solution designed specifically for that purpose.

ARE THE JOINTS BETWEEN THE PANELS VISIBLE?

The joints between the panels may be slightly visible. Cork is a material that reacts to the conditions in the room, which is why acclimatisation before installation is so important. This helps reduce subsequent changes in the dimensions of the panels and, as a result, makes the joints less noticeable. However, it is worth remembering that slightly visible joints after assembly are a natural feature of the material.

#1 CORK AND WOOL TOGETHER

Combining natural cork with coloured wool creates an effect that is hard to find in typical wall panels. The surface feels visually warm, irregular and full of detail.
