WHICH MATERIALS ARE BROUGHT TOGETHER IN THE BUREL COLLECTION?

The Burel collection brings together two materials with a strong connection to Portuguese tradition – cork and burel.

Cork has been closely linked with Portugal for generations. Its use now extends far beyond bottle stoppers and traditional cork boards – you can also find it in decorative wall coverings, floors, furniture and a wide range of everyday products. Burel is an authentic Portuguese textile made entirely from sheep’s wool, originating from the mountainous Serra da Estrela area.

WHAT DOES THE BUREL SCARLET RED MODEL LOOK LIKE?

Burel Scarlet Red is built around a warm, natural cork background, broken up by irregular burel details in vivid red, burgundy and darker wine-inspired shades.

It works well if you appreciate the organic character of cork but want the wall to have a stronger colour accent. Burel Scarlet Red introduces rich red tones without overwhelming the natural variation and texture of the cork itself.

WHAT IS THE LAYERED STRUCTURE OF BUREL DECORATIVE CORK PANELS?

Each panel is made up of three functional layers:

Surface protection layer.
Decorative layer combining natural cork veneer with burel fragments.
Base layer made from agglomerated cork.

HOW DO YOU INSTALL DECORATIVE CORK PANELS?

The panels are fixed directly to the wall with adhesive. For this model, our recommended option is Wakol D-3540. Average adhesive usage is approximately 150–250 g/m², which allows you to estimate the amount needed based on the size of the installation area. A 0.8 kg pack is sufficient for roughly 4 m², or about 22 panels, while a 2.5 kg pack covers approximately 12.5 m², equivalent to around 68 panels.

WHAT SHOULD BE DONE BEFORE INSTALLING THE PANELS?

Before the panels are fixed in place, the wall needs to be prepared correctly. Make sure it is clean, dry, level and free from dust, grease or any other contamination that could weaken the adhesive bond.

Any uneven areas should be levelled before installation begins. On highly absorbent surfaces, including concrete, using a primer is recommended. It helps stop the adhesive from being absorbed into the wall too quickly.

Another important step is to acclimatise the cork before installation, preferably for around 72 hours. During this time, the material can adjust to the room’s temperature and humidity.

DO THESE PANELS HAVE BEVELLED EDGES?

No. The edges of the panels are not bevelled.

WHY CHOOSE DECORATIVE CORK PANELS OVER OTHER MATERIALS?

Wall materials can create very different impressions inside a room. Plastic is synthetic, while ceramic usually feels cooler and more rigid. Cork offers a very different experience – it is natural, warm to the touch and gives the surface a more welcoming character.

CAN DECORATIVE CORK IMPROVE INSULATION?

There is an important difference between making a room feel more comfortable and providing dedicated insulation. Decorative cork can make the wall feel warmer and more pleasant when touched, while its natural appearance can also make the whole interior seem visually warmer.

That said, the Burel range is intended mainly as a decorative finish. If your main objective is thermal insulation, products such as ThermoKork Panels or Expanded Cork are more appropriate for that purpose.

In practice, decorative cork is a sensible option when you want an attractive wall finish that also adds to everyday comfort. If insulation performance is the main requirement, it is better to select a product specifically designed for insulation.

CAN YOU SEE THE JOINTS BETWEEN INDIVIDUAL PANELS?

Some of the joints between the panels can remain slightly noticeable. Cork naturally responds to changes in indoor temperature and humidity, which is one of the reasons why proper acclimatisation before fitting is essential. Giving the material enough time to adapt helps limit later dimensional movement and can make the joins less apparent. Even with correct installation, however, subtle visible joints are a normal characteristic of natural cork.

Want to move away from synthetic finishes and surfaces that feel cold or overly hard? Some wall coverings may look appealing at first glance, yet lack warmth when you experience them in the room. #1 TWO NATURAL MATERIALS IN ONE SURFACE

Natural cork paired with coloured wool produces a finish that looks noticeably different from standard decorative panels. The surface appears warm and textured, with irregular details that prevent it from looking repetitive.

There is also a strong link to traditional Portuguese craftsmanship. Both cork and burel have long histories in Portugal, and this collection brings them together in a contemporary wall finish.

Burel Scarlet Red is especially suitable when you want something more expressive than a plain wall covering. The natural cork remains clearly visible, while red fragments introduce contrast and make each section of the surface feel more individual.

#2 NATURAL AND EASY TO MAINTAIN

Choosing cork can help you limit synthetic finishes in the interior, as it is a material of natural origin. It also has another useful everyday advantage – it does not attract dust as readily as many conventional surfaces. That can be helpful when you want a decorative feature wall without creating extra cleaning work.

Routine care is uncomplicated. Soft cleaning is usually all that is required, so keeping the cork surface in good condition does not involve time-consuming or specialist maintenance.

#3 A FINISH THAT DOES MORE THAN ADD COLOUR

Paint and wallpaper remain familiar options, but they mainly change what you see on the surface. Cork brings something more tangible to the wall – natural structure, visible variation and a texture that gives the entire surface more depth.

Because of this, the wall can become a decorative feature on its own, reducing the need to add extra ornaments around it. For interiors where another flat, uniform finish feels too predictable, Burel Scarlet Red offers a more distinctive alternative, combining natural cork with bold red details for a refined premium appearance.
