WHAT TWO MATERIALS DEFINE THE BUREL COLLECTION?
At the heart of the Burel collection are two materials with a strong Portuguese identity – cork and burel.
Cork is one of the materials most closely associated with Portugal, and its uses now reach far beyond bottle stoppers and notice boards. It is found in wall finishes, floors, furniture and a wide variety of everyday objects. Burel is a traditional Portuguese fabric woven from 100% sheep’s wool, with a history linked to the mountainous Serra da Estrela region.
HOW DOES THE BUREL SIDERAL GREY DECOR LOOK?
Burel Sideral Grey combines a warm natural cork background with randomly distributed burel fragments in grey. Larger pieces of cork remain visible across the surface, while the darker wool accents weave between them without following a fixed or symmetrical pattern.
This version suits interiors where you want to keep the authentic character of cork but introduce a cooler, more restrained contrast. The grey details add definition without taking attention away from the naturally varied cork structure.
HOW IS BUREL CORK PANELLING CONSTRUCTED?
The structure consists of three main layers:
- Protective top finish.
- Decorative layer formed from natural cork veneer and burel pieces.
- Supporting layer of agglomerated cork.

WHAT IS THE INSTALLATION METHOD FOR CORK PANELLING?
The panels are bonded directly to the wall with adhesive. For Burel Sideral Grey, we particularly recommend Wakol D-3540. Expected usage is around 150–250 g/m², making it possible to estimate the required amount from the size of the wall. A 0.8 kg container covers approximately 4 m², which corresponds to about 22 panels. A 2.5 kg container is enough for roughly 12.5 m², or approximately 68 panels.

HOW SHOULD THE WALL BE PREPARED BEFORE INSTALLATION?
Good preparation starts with the substrate. Before any panels are attached, check that the wall is dry, clean, flat and completely free from dust, grease or other residues that could interfere with adhesion.
Any irregularities should be corrected beforehand. On very absorbent substrates, including concrete, applying a suitable primer is advisable because it reduces the speed at which the wall draws moisture from the adhesive.
The cork should also be given time to acclimatise before installation, ideally for around 72 hours. This allows the material to settle into the temperature and humidity conditions of the room. Installing it too soon can increase the possibility of dimensional movement afterwards.
IS THERE A BEVEL AROUND THE PANEL EDGES?
No. The panel edges are straight and do not feature a bevel.
WHY CHOOSE CORK PANELLING OVER OTHER WALL MATERIALS?
Different wall finishes can change the atmosphere of a room in very different ways. Plastic is a synthetic option, while ceramic usually feels harder and cooler to the touch. Cork offers another kind of experience altogether – it is natural, tactile and pleasantly warm, which can make the interior feel more comfortable and welcoming.
That difference can be especially noticeable in spaces such as bedrooms, living rooms and home offices, where a softer and warmer atmosphere is often desirable. Cork brings its own organic structure to the wall.
CAN DECORATIVE CORK CONTRIBUTE TO INSULATION?
It helps to separate improved day-to-day comfort from dedicated insulation performance. Decorative cork can make the wall feel warmer and more pleasant when touched, and its natural appearance can also make the room seem visually warmer and more comfortable.
The Burel range is, however, intended mainly as a decorative wall finish. If thermal insulation is the main reason for choosing cork, ThermoKork Panels or Expanded Cork will be better suited to that purpose.
So, if you are looking for an attractive wall finish that also adds a little extra comfort, decorative cork is a sensible option. When insulation itself is the main goal, a product specifically developed for insulating applications will be the more appropriate choice.
WILL THE SEAMS BETWEEN THE PANELS BE NOTICEABLE?
The seams between neighbouring panels can sometimes remain slightly visible. Cork naturally reacts to the temperature and humidity of the room, which makes correct acclimatisation before fitting especially important. Allowing the material to adjust in advance helps minimise later dimensional changes and can make the joins less apparent. Even so, small visible seams after installation are a normal characteristic of natural cork.
Trying to avoid interiors dominated by plastic and hard, chilly finishes? Some wall coverings can seem attractive on screen yet feel noticeably less natural once they are installed.
